Ethics and Care

ETHICAL & SUSTAINABLE JEWELLERY

I don’t believe that jewellery can ever wholly be ethical or sustainable.

Taking raw inputs from the earth by mining precious metals and gems affects the environment all over the world. Not to mention, there are so many consumables that go into making jewellery. During the making and finishing process using chemicals and non-renewable inputs are unavoidable.

I do my best to minimise my impact by producing items of jewellery that are wearable beyond seasons. Through thoughtful design and a high level of craftswomanship, I ensure that my jewellery endures.

I make all the jewellery produced under my name ‘Lori Hakim’ in my studio, no offshore production. To bring my pieces to life, I use local suppliers and independent tradespeople in fields such as stone setting and casting.

Through my workshop practices, I use inputs with minimal impact on the environment. Where possible, I use recycled metal and prefer to use synthetic stones. I collect all offcuts and lemel (metal dust) for refining in the future. If I can avoid using a chemical, I will, and if I do use them, I dispose of them according to best practice.

I am always looking for ways to improve and adapt – this is a constant for any responsible designer.

General Care

Nearly all metals will tarnish except for a few non-alloyed or pure metals.

Metal is affected by many elements that cause the surface to change or discolour – moisture, air, chemicals and even the PH of your skin. The good news is that cleaning is super simple!

Use a precious metal polishing cloth and your jewellery should come up beautifully. If cleaning brass, Brasso does the trick.

For general cleaning use warm water, mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush. Take special care with enamel paint as cleaning can scratch and wear away if you are too aggressive in your approach.

To ensure the longevity of your jewellery here are a few general tips:

  • Store correctly, if not worn in a dry place. Keep separate from other jewellery items that could damage your piece
  • Never put stud earrings in your wallet, it’s a recipe for disaster
  • Do not clean with abrasive products or harsh chemicals
  • Avoid spraying perfume onto jewellery
  • Bending leads to breakage – be gentle and careful
  • Remove jewellery in chlorine, saltwater and when washing dishes etc.

CARING FOR ENAMEL

Enamel is a technique where glass fuses to metal, creating a permanent bond of brilliant stable colour.

When wearing enamel jewellery, be gentle, as enamel is glass. Enamel rings are suitable for everyday wear. Take care not to drop them, as they may chip if dropped on hard surfaces or exposed to excessive force. I recommend extra special care for enamel earrings to avoid damage. When putting on, or taking off earrings, try to do so on a soft carpeted surface, as they are at quite a height!

If you need to clean your jewellery, use a silver cloth. Avoid exposing your enamel pieces to chemicals, as this can dull their appearance. If you feel uncertain about the best way to clean your jewellery, get in touch. I am more than happy to provide advice on a particular item you have.

If you treat your enamel jewellery well, it will last.
